| Chickenpox |
This is to notify you that there has been an outbreak of chicken pox in our child care.
Symptoms:Symptoms to look for in your child are a low-grade fever and he/she will be tired. Then a rash appears which may be anywhere on the body, but usually starts on the chest or back or under the arms. It first appears as flat red dots that become raised like pimples. The pimples then become water-filled blisters within several hours that may itch. The blisters break, ooze, then form crust or scabs. Expect new pox every day for five to six days. Actions: If your child contracts this illness you may give acetaminophen (Tylenol or other brand) every four to six hours. DO NOT give aspirin because of the risk of developing Reyes syndrome (a serious condition which can be fatal). Encourage your child to drink plenty of liquids. For itching take lukewarm baths with 1/4 cup baking soda or cornstarch added, apply calamine lotion and take benedryl. A child with chicken pox should be excluded from daycare. They may return in six days after the rash has started or after all of the blisters have formed scabs. Thank you for your support. By working together we can keep all our children healthy.
