Kate Abernathy

Chief Executive Officer
With Providers Choice since 2015


As Chief Executive Officer, Kate is responsible for the overall leadership and continued growth of Providers Choice. She works with key stake holders to support their child and adult care businesses in feeding children and older adults healthy nutritious meals. Kate enjoys working with child care and adult care professionals to expand participation in the Child and Adult Care Food Program.

Prior to becoming CEO, Kate served as the Director of Nutrition Education for 4 years and led the effort to teach and implement the New Meal Patterns. Kate has a passion for food and nutrition policy and works closely with child care professionals, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), food industry leaders and other national partners to understand and implement program changes in order to grow the participation of the Child and Adult Care Food Program within Minnesota and around the country. One of Kateís core strengths is her aptitude and focus on efficient and effective training and development. She loves to work with staff and providers to ensure that all care centers serve wholesome, comforting and nourishing meals and snacks.

Kate is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. She received her undergraduate degree in dietetics from the College of St. Benedict, her masterís degree in Human Nutrition from Eastern Michigan University and holds certificates in adult and childhood nutrition. Kate is has been recognized on the national level by serving on the 2019 Institute of Child Nutrition CACFP Advisory Board and has been an invited speaker at the National Child Nutrition Conference (National CACFP Sponsors Association Conference) since 2016. She has also been invited to consult with governmental regulatory agencies and with food industry partners.

Kateís passion for child and adult nutrition stems from a strong desire to promote health and wellness. Prior to joining Providers Choice, she supported various groups to bring healthy nutritious choices to children. Some examples of her work include advising the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Childrenís Hospital of Chicago to update their menu with the Partnership for a Healthier America and also advising school districts on menu and nutrition planning to meet and exceed the requirements of the School Lunch Program.

Kate is the mother to two young girls that keep her busy and on the go. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, cooking and being active with her husband, Sean.
